Songs by M Jayachandran are good to hear but their placement affects the flow of the film. Mamangam's production value (minus the graphics) elevates the film to a whole new level. Siddique and Prachi Tehlan have limited screen presence and their performances don't have the kind of impact it should have. After Mammootty, it is Achuthan who makes a mark with his acting and fighting skills. Unni Mukundan does not have a lot of dialogues to say and is forced to fall back on his action sequences. Mammootty's monologue stresses on the importance of practical thinking and how we need not follow age-old traditions just for the sake of it. The entire village is bent on sending two of their sons to reclaim the throne. Mammootty was last seen in the high-voltage Malayalam flick Bheeshma Parvam, which has received heaps of praise from the audience and critics alike.The star is now gearing up for the release of his next movie, Agent, in which he will be seen sharing the screen with Akhil Akkineni and Sakshi Vaidya. His dialogue, especially during the climax in this set-in-17th-century film, is relevant in the current day too. Mammootty, who plays the role of an ultimate warrior, lives his role. Director M Padmakumar's prowess comes in handy while handling these portions. Mamangam delves deep into the life of Panicker, who is in the disguise of an effeminate person. The film's positive points are the flashback portions after the death of the foreign merchant. A runaway hit at the box office, the film earned some rave reviews and helped Mammootty win a Filmfare award. Had the makers concentrated a little more on the visual effects, in addition to the set pieces, the overall viewer experience would have been better. Varsham: Directed by Ranjith Sarkar, ‘Varsham’ is best remembered for its heat warming storyline which touched upon the turbulent relationship between a father and his son. But the CG blood is all over the person who gets wounded. In some of the sequences, you can see the swords wielded by the warriors not even touching the other person. Mamangam has been marketed as the costliest Malayalam film yet the VFX is tacky. The banter between the two is among the few highlights of Mamangam. Mammootty and Master Achuthan both maintain a stoic expression throughout the film, which helps convey the seriousness of the characters. While the film speaks about the valour of the Chandroth family, the stunt sequences are hard to believe, despite the film's justification of these over-the-top scenes. The story of Mamangam is set in the 17th century and it is great to see elderly women take important decisions on whether to send their sons as chaverukal or not.
